UNA COMPRENSION MAS PROFUNDA

He estado pensando mucho en el asunto que discutimos en nuestro último post (19 de noviembre) y me gustaría presentar algunos pensamientos adicionales que nos ayudarán a profundizar más en el tema.

Con el correr de los años, he visto que nuestro progreso personal y el progreso de nuestro movimiento a menudo terminan estancado debido a nuestra incapacidad de tratar apropiadamente con nuestras emociones negativas respecto a los demás. Por otro lado, también he experimentado como, cuando el resentimiento y otros malos sentimientos muestran sus rostros en el día a día de nuestras vidas, si son tratados con madurez espiritual, entonces pueden modificarse en una fuerza positiva de transformación para todos nosotros. Y de esta manera, nuestro movimiento puede avanzar del modo en que debería.

Si se toman el tiempo de leer nuevamente la cita de Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur incluida en el post anterior respecto al perdón, y si lo comparan con el significado de Prabhupada del BG 12.12-13 presentado aquí, verán que buena parte del mensaje es identico. Prabhupada dice: "Un devoto puro nunca es perturbado bajo ninguna circunstancia. Ni es envidioso de nadie. Tampoco un devoto se vuelve el enemigo de su enemigo; él piensa, "Esta persona esta actuando como mi enemiga debido a mis fechorías pasadas. Entonces es mejor sufrir que protestar."

En El Srimad-Bhagavatam (10.14.8) se declara: tat te'nukampam su samiksamano bhunjana evatma kirtam vipakam. Cuando un devoto esta angustiado o ha caído en alguna dificultad, él siempre piensa que es por la misericordia del Señor. Él piensa, "Gracias a mis fechorías pasadas yo debería sufrir mucho, mucho más de lo que estoy sufriendo ahora. Es debido a la misericordia del Señor Supremo que no estoy recibiendo todo el castigo que merezco. Sólo estoy recibiendo un poco por la misericordia de la Suprema Personalidad de Dios." Por lo tanto, él siempre esta calmado, callado y paciente a pesar de cualquier situación angustiosa. Un devoto siempre es amable con todos, incluso con su enemigo.

Aunque he leído muchas veces estas palabras de arriba, cuando llegué a ellas recientemente tuvieron más significado para mí que nunca antes. Quizás necesitaba leer primero la cita de Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur para comprender mejor los puntos de Prabhupada. No sólo nos enseñan que la adversidad inflingida por otros proviene de nuestras propias fechorías - y no de los demás - sino también que la adversidad es minimizada en gran parte por la misericordia de Krsna. Por lo tanto, debemos intentar llegar al punto de sentir alivio y gratitud por lo que nos esta sucediendo, no frustración y resentimiento. Justo como cuando un juez nos ayuda a comprender que somos claramente culpables de una infracción, pero nos dice que, por nuestro buen comportamiento, sólo nos cobrará una fracción de la multa que normalmente deberíamos pagar.

Aquí hay otra comprensión valiosa que podemos obtener al ser maltratados u ofendidos. Puede ser difícil de incorporar a nuestras vidas diarias, pero si lo hacemos, seremos capaces de sentir gran alegría y alivio: cuando pensemos en aquellos que nos han demostrado animosidad, debemos intentar sentir compasión hacía ellos sabiendo que su comportamiento hacía nosotros les causará el mismo sufrimiento que nosotros atravesamos ahora debido a nuestro idéntico mal comportamiento en el pasado. Nuestra meta debería ser desechar cualquier resentimiento hacía tales personas y tener simpatía por ellas, satisfaciendo así nuestro mandato de ser un amable amigo para todos, incluso nuestro enemigo.

Nuestro único enemigo, entonces, es el enemigo interior, nuestra propia ignorancia que nos impulsa a actuar y pensar de tantas formas destructivas, causándonos tanto dolor en el futuro. Si reconocemos y focalizamos en eso, nuestra enemistad hacía otros pronto desaparecerá y dejará abierta la puerta de par en par para que el amor llene nuestros corazones, sin importar las acciones de los demás o su mentalidad hacía nosotros.

A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING

I have been thinking a lot about the subject matter that we discussed in the last post (Nov. 19th) and would like to present a few more thoughts that could help us go deeper.

I have seen over the years that our personal progress and the progress of our movement is often checked due to our inability to cope properly with our negative emotions towards each other. On the other hand, I have also experienced how, when resentment and other ill feelings show their face in our day-to-day lives, if they are handled with spiritual maturity, they can be turned into a powerful source of positive transformation for all of us. And in this way our movement can go forward as it is meant to.

If you take the time to again read the quote by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur included in the post below on forgiveness, and if you compare it to Prabhupada's purport of BG 12.12-13 presented here, you will see that much of the message is identical. Prabhupada says: "A pure devotee is never disturbed in any circumstances. Nor is he envious of anyone. Nor does a devotee become his enemy's enemy; he thinks, "This person is acting as my enemy due to my own past misdeeds. So it is better to suffer than to protest."

In the Srimad-Bhagavatam (10.14.8) it is stated: tat te'nukampam su samiksamano bhunjana evatma kirtam vipakam. Whenever a devotee is in distress or has fallen into difficulty, he thinks that it is the Lord's mercy upon him. He thinks, "Thanks to my past misdeeds I should suffer far, far greater than I am suffering now. So it is by the mercy of the Supreme Lord that I am not getting all the punishment I am due. I am just getting a little, by the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead." Therefore he is always calm, quiet and patient, despite many distressful conditions. A devotee is also always kind to everyone, even to his enemy.

Although I had read the above words many times, when I recently came across them they had more meaning to me than ever before. Perhaps I needed to read the quote by Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur first to bring Prabhupada's points further home. Not only are we being taught by them that adversity brought upon us by others comes about because of our own misdeeds - not theirs - but also that that adversity is being greatly minimized due to Krsna's mercy. Thus we should try to come to the point of feeling relief and gratitude for what is taking place, not frustration and resentment. Just like when a judge helps us understand that we are clearly guilty of an infraction but tells us that, because of our good behavior, he will only charge a fraction of the fine we would ordinarily have to pay.

There is another valuable understanding we can gain from being treated badly or offended. It might be difficult to incorporate into our daily lives, but if we do, we will be able to feel great joy and relief: when thinking of those who have shown us animosity, we should try to feel compassion towards them, knowing that their inimical behavior towards us will cause them the same suffering that we are now undergoing due to our identical ill behavior in the past. Our goal should thus be to cast out any resentment towards such persons and have sympathy for them, thus fulfilling our mandate to be a kind friend to everyone, even our enemy.

Our only enemy, then, is the enemy within, our own ignorance, which causes us to act and think in so many destructive ways, bringing on so much future pain. If we recongnize and focus on that, our enmity towards others will soon go away and leave the door wide open for love to fill our hearts, regardless of anyone's actions or mentality towards us.

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura comenta lo siguiente. "Usualmente, aquellos que abandonan el camino del materialismo y se dedican a la renunciación son atacados por personas impías. Este análisis, sin embargo, es superficial, pues el castigo es en realidad el resultado acumulativo del karma previo de uno. De esta cita podemos entender que si nos enojamos al ser insultados, debemos saber que nuestra ira debe dirigirse a la verdadera causa del problema, y esa causa no es la persona que nos ofendió. En este caso, tampoco es Krsna, quien esta sancionando y permitiendo las acciones de esa persona. Mejor dicho, la causa no es otra que nosotros mismos. Ciertamente no es sencillo ver las cosas de este modo, en especial cuando sentimos el dolor de las palabras o acciones del otro, y cuando hemos estado atrapados en patrones de pensamiento ilusorio durante un largo tiempo. Por lo tanto, es necesario entrenamiento y purificación para desarrollar una visión apropiada, y nos han dado, para ello, guru, sadhu, y sastra para saturar nuestra conciencia condicionada con la verdad.

Pero, si llegamos al punto de permitirnos ver que en verdad somos culpables de nuestras miserias, ¿hay algún valor en estar enojados con nosotros mismos? ¿Debemos gastar nuestro tiempo lamentándonos y pensando en nosotros mismos de un modo negativo? Prabhupada nos dice que realmente es apropiado sentir vergüenza por nuestras transgresiones del pasado, pero sólo hasta un punto práctico. Debemos enfocar en perdonarnos a nosotros mismos, del mismo modo que sabemos qué tan importante es perdonar a los demás. Podemos dejar a un lado nuestros dolores y enojos propios, y tener la fuerza para avanzar en nuestro servicio con una actitud positiva y un corazón sin lastre.

Nuestro ego falso lucha contra la posibilidad de poner en práctica lo arriba mencionado, pero no hay límites al beneficio que podemos obtener de ello. El perdonar es una gran virtud sin la cual ningún verdadero devoto puede vivir.

FORGIVING IS A GREAT VIRTUE

Here is a very useful quote for all of us.

SB 11.23.5:

TRANSLATION
Once a certain sannyasi was insulted in many ways by impious men. However, with determination he remembered that he was suffering the fruit of his own previous karma. I will narrate to you his story and that which he spoke.

PURPORT
Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura comments as follows. "Often those who give up the materialistic path and devote themselves to renunciation are attacked by impious persons. This analysis, however, is superficial, since the punishment is actually the cumulative result of one's past karma. Some renunciants show lack of tolerance when presented with the remnants of their previous sins and thus are forced to enter again onto the path of impious life. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu therefore instructs that one should become as tolerant as a tree. If a neophyte on the path of devotional service to the Lord's pure devotees is attacked by envious persons, he must accept it as a consequence of his previous fruitive activities. One should be intelligent and avoid future unhappiness by rejecting the ethic of an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. If one refuses to enter into enmity with envious men, they will automatically leave him alone."

From this quote we can understand that if we become angry upon being insulted, we should know that our anger should be directed at the actual cause of the problem, and that cause is not the person who offended us. Nor is it Krsna, for that matter, who is sanctioning and enabling that person's actions. Rather, the cause is none other than our very selves. It is certainly not easy to see things in that way, especially when we are feeling the pain of another's words or actions and when we have been steeped in illusory thought patterns for a very long time. Thus, it takes training and purification to develop the proper vision, and we have, therefore, been given guru, sadhu, and sastra to saturate our conditioned consciousness with the truth.

But, if we can come to the point of allowing ourselves to see that we are in fact to blame for our miseries, is there value in being angry with ourselves? And should we spend our time lamenting and thinking of ourselves in a negative way? Prabhupada does tell us it is indeed proper to feel shame for our past transgressions, but only up to a practical point. We should mainly focus on forgiving ourselves, just as we know how important it is to forgive others. We can then put aside our pain and self anger and have the strength go forward in our service with a posititve attitude and unburdened heart.

Our false egos struggle against our putting all of the above into action, but there is no limit to the amount we can benefit by doing so. Forgiving is a great virtue that no true devotee can live without.

ASOCIACION CON LOS SADHUS

Prabhupada dice en el significado del verso 24 de "Las enseñanzas del Señor Kapila": En vez de pensar: "Si no me tomo un trago, me volveré loco", tenemos que pensar: "Si no encuentro un sadhu, me volveré loco".

Antes de conocer a los devotos, yo en verdad era un loco que frenéticamente buscaba la felicidad material. Años más tarde, en los 90's, Lokanatha Swami y yo estábamos juntos mirando asombrados como cientos de jóvenes disfrutadores de los sentidos estaban siendo transformados por cantar y bailar en éxtasis en un festival. Él se volvió hacía mi y enfáticamente declaró, "¡¡¡¡¡Gracias a Dios por Srila Prabhupada!!!!!"

Hoy, las palabras de Maharaja retumban en mi mente y bailan en mi lengua, pues en este mismo día, un 6 de noviembre, hace exactamente 40 años, yo decidí recuperar mi cordura al unirme a los devotos en el templo y sumergirme en el servicio devocional. Sí, "Gracias a Dios por Srila Prabhupada".

Y también le doy gracias a Él por los santos hijos y las santas hijas de Srila Prabhupada, quienes tan paciente y amorosamente me echaron una mano y me llevaron hasta su trascendental familia. Recuerdo que la atmósfera en el templo era tan pura y atractiva que incluso esta alma tan caída se convenció de nunca irse y regresar a la intoxicante locura del mundo material.

ASSOCIATION WITH THE SADHUS

Prabhupada says in the purport of verse 24 of "The Teachings of Lord Kapila": Instead of thinking, “Unless I have a drink, I will go mad,” one should think, “Unless I associate with a sadhu, I will go mad.”

Before meeting the devotees I was indeed a madman who was frantically searching for material happiness. Years later, in the 90's, Lokanatha Swami and I were together watching in amazement how hundreds of young sense enjoyers were being transformed by dancing and chanting in ecstacy at a festival. He turned to me and emphatically declared, "Thank God for Srila Prabhupada!!!!!"

Today, Maharaja's words are echoing in my mind and dancing on my toungue, for it was on this day, November 6th, exactly 40 years ago, that I decided to regain my sanity by joining with the devotees in the temple and immersing myself in devotional service. Yes, "Thank God for Srila Prabhupada".

And thank Him as well for Srila Prabhupada's saintly sons and daughters, who so patiently and lovingly reached out to me and brought me into their transcendental family. I remember the atmosphere in the temple being so pure and attractive that even this most fallen soul became convinced he would never want to leave and return to the intoxicating madness of the material world.

Somehow or other, in spite of my innumerable offenses, Krsna is still keeping me under His shelter. That is all due to the divine mercy of Srila Prabhupada and his entourage of devotees, young and old. I pray to never lose their company.

LA IMPORTANCIA DE ESCRIBIR

"Cada uno de ustedes, ¿cuáles son sus realizaciones? Ustedes escriban sus realizaciones — qué han realizado acerca de Krsna. Eso es requerido. No es pasivo; ustedes siempre deben ser activos. Cuando encuentren un tiempo, escriban. No importa — dos líneas, cuatro líneas, pero escriban sus realizaciones. Srvananam kirtanam — escribiendo o ofreciendo oraciones, glorias — esta es una de las funciones de un Vaisnava [devoto]. Ustedes están escuchando, pero deben escribir también. Entonces, escribir significa smaranam — recordar qué han oído del maestro espiritual, de las escrituras."

Hace unos días subí una entrada acerca de escribir canciones y poesía. Arriba vemos que Prabhupada glorifica a la escritura en general y anima a todos sus seguidores a adoptarla. Él nos explica que escribir automaticamente involucra al devoto en tres de los aspectos más potentes del servicio devocional: escuchar y cantar acerca de Krishna y también recordarlo [sravanam, kirtanam, smaranam]. Por lo tanto, es un maravilloso ejercicio que nos permite focalizar muy especifica y profundamente en temas relacionados con Krsna, y así purificarnos. Apenas con pensar en tópicos trascendentales sin siquiera escribir acerca de ellos, por supuesto, ya nos estamos purificando; qué decir de hablar acerca de estos temas. Pero la ventaja puntual de escribir es que nos ayuda a disminuir la velocidad de nuestro pensar para que podamos organizar y solidificar nuestros pensamientos de una forma concisa, cohesiva y atractiva. Y luego, como estas realizaciones están disponibles para la lectura, pueden ser una fuente continua de inspiración para nosotros mismos y quizás para otros también. A través de los años, he visto que muchos devotos han tenido la oportunidad de leer con gran interés lo que previamente habían escrito, pero luego olvidado. Es como descubrir una parte de nosotros que habíamos perdido y alegrarnos mucho por haberla encontrado otra vez.

En estos días no he dado clases ni hablado mucho debido a que mis cuerdas vocales han estado de paro por un tiempo. Krsna muy amablemente me ha ubicado en esta posición; primero, para inspirarme a escribir de una manera más formal. A veces es difícil para mi ingresar a un modo apropiado de concentración, pero con algo de esfuerzo puedo usualmente superar las barreras mentales y encontrarme en un reino de absoción que resulta bastante disfrutable. De forma similar, frecuentemente he visto devotos retrasar o dejar para después tareas como escribir sus ofrendas Vyasa Puja para Prabhupada o sus maestros espirituales. Pero al final, ellos siempre expresan qué tan satisfactorio resultó poder finalmente sentarse, dejar todo lo demás de lado, y volcar los sentimientos en sus corazones.

No hay duda sobre ello, conciencia de Krishna, tal como nos lo otorga Prabhupada, realmente funciona y es en verdad sublime. Su-sukham kartum avyayam. "Es eterno, y se ejecuta con alegría." Bg. 9.2

THE IMPORTANCE OF WRITING

During a lecture in 1972, Srila Prabhupada instructed us:

Every one of you, what is your realization? You write your realization — what you have realized about Krsna. That is required. It is not passive; always you should be active. Whenever you find time, write. Never mind — two lines, four lines, but you write your realizations. Srvananam kirtanam — writing or offering prayers, glories —this is one of the functions of a Vaisnava [devotee]. You are hearing, but you have to write also. Then, writing means smaranam — remembering what you have heard from your spiritual master, from the scripture."

Some days ago, I posted an entry about writing songs and poetry. Above we see that Prabhupada is glorifying writing in general and encouraging all his followers to take it up. He is explaining that writing automatically involves a devotee in three of the most potent aspects of devotional service: hearing and chanting about Krishna and remembering Him [sravanam, kirtanam, smaranam]. Thus it is a wonderful exercise and enables us to focus very specifically and deeply on topics related to Krsna and become purified. Merely thinking about transcendental topics even without writing about them is, of course, also purifying, what to speak of talking about them. But the unique advantage of writing is that it helps us to slow down our thinking so that we can organize and solidify our thoughts in a concise, cohesive, and attractive manner. And later on, because those realizations will be available for reading, they can provide a continued source of inspiration for ourselves and perhaps others as well. Througout the years, I have seen that many devotees have had occassion to read with great interest what they previously wrote down, but later forgot. It is like discovering a part of ourselves that we have lost and are very happy to find again.

Nowadays, I have not been giving classes or speaking very much due to my vocal cords going on strike for a while. Krsna has so kindly put me in this position, for one, to inspire me to take up writing in a more formal way. At times it is difficult for me to enter into the proper mood of concentation, but with some effort I can usually overcome the mental barriers and find myself in a realm of absorbtion that is quite relishable. Similarly, I have often seen devotees procrastinate quite a bit when faced with the task of writing their Vyasa Puja offerings to Prabhupada or their spiritual master. But in the end they always say how satisfying it was to have finally been able to sit down, put everything else aside, and pour out their heartfelt feelings.

There is no doubt about it, Krishna consciousness as Prabhupada is giving it to us actually works and is quite sublime. Su-sukham kartum avyayam. "It is everlasting, and it is joyfully performed." Bg. 9.2

MINIMO DE PALABRAS, MAXIMO DE SIGNIFICADOS

Siguiendo con nuestra discusión acerca de emplear nuestros talentos en conciencia de Krsna: Una de las 26 cualidades de un devoto avanzado es que él o ella es poeta. Por ello encontramos que tantos de nuestros acaryas, incluyendo Prabhupada, nos han dejado hermosos poemas y bhajans para deleitarnos y aprender.

Srila Prabhupada le dice en una carta a Patita Uddaran: "Por favor continua con tu composición de canciones y poemas para Krishna, porque cantar las alabanzas de Krishna es el más elevado tipo de actividad espiritual y le otorgará a Él un gran disfrute. Yo estaré complacido si me envía una cinta con algunas de sus composiciones."

Y en el Srimad Bhagavatam, 10.9.1-2, Prabhupada escribe: "Mientras batía la mantequilla, madre Yasoda cantaba acerca de las actividades infantiles de Krsna. En el pasado era costumbre que si se deseaba recordar algo constantemente, había que verterlo en forma poética o encomendar esa poesía a un poeta profesional. Parece ser que madre Yasoda no quería olvidar las actividades de Krsna ni por un instante, de modo que ponía en forma poética todas las actividades infantiles de Krsna, como las muertes de Putana, Aghasura, Sakatasura y Trinavarta, y mientras batía la mantequilla cantaba poesías acerca de esas actividades. Así deben actuar las personas que deseen permanecer conscientes de Krsna las veinticuatro horas del día. Este hecho nos muestra el grado de conciencia de Krsna de madre Yasoda. Para mantenernos conscientes de Krsna, debemos seguir a esas personas."

Como vemos arriba, escribir poemas y agregarles música son herramientas muy efectivas para el desarrollo de nuestra conciencia de Krsna. La poesía utiliza un mínimo de palabras para presentar un máximo de significados, y es sencilla de recitar, cantar y recordar. Si alguno quiere compartir conmigo su poesía, canciones u obras de arte, y así inspirarme en mi vida espiritual, les estaré muy agradecido. También estoy considerando tener una sección en mi blog para exhibir tales trabajos.

La foto de Prabhupada posteada junto a este artículo es uno de mis más queridos objetos de meditación. Mi querido amigo Yudhistthira, quien pintó el retrato de Prabhupada en mi entrada previa, recientemente se ha ofrecido para pintar un gran cuadro de esta foto en el templo de Buenos Aires. Desafortunadamente, durante el viaje el vidrio se rompió en pedazos, pero aun así tengo tu imagen en mi cuarto de trabajo, y todos elogian tu sentido artístico. Es muy bonita. Estoy muy contento de saber también que tu estas intentando pintar cuadros similares en un tamaño más grande, esta es una muy buena idea. Tu tienes un sentido poético también, y todos estos talentos pueden comprometerse en el servicio a Krishna. Todos los devotos son más o menos poetas. De las 26 cualidades de un devoto perfecto, una de ellas es el sentido poético. Podemos escribir tantas poesías en alabanza al Señor, o Sus pasatiempos. Continuing our discussion about employing our talents in Krsna consciousness: One of the 26 qualities of an advanced devotee is that he or she is poetic. Thus we find that so many of our acaryas, including Prabhupada, have left us beautiful poems and bhajans to relish and learn from.

Srila Prabhupada says in a letter to Patita Uddaran: "Please continue in your writing of songs and poems for Krishna, because singing Krishna's praises is the highest type of spiritual activity and will give Him great enjoyment. I would be pleased if you can send me a tape of some of your compositions."

And in the Srimad Bhagavatam, 10.9.1-2, Prabhupada writes: "While churning the butter, mother Yasoda was singing about the childhood activities of Krsna. It was formerly a custom that if one wanted to remember something constantly, he would transform it into poetry or have this done by a professional poet. It appears that mother Yasoda did not want to forget Krsna's activities at any time. Therefore she poeticized all of Krsna's childhood activities, such as the killing of Putana, Aghasura, Sakatasura and Trinavarta, and while churning the butter, she sang about these activities in poetical form. This should be the practice of persons eager to remain Krsna conscious twenty-four hours a day. This incident shows how Krsna conscious mother Yasoda was. To stay in Krsna consciousness, we should follow such persons."

As we see above, writing poems and putting them to music are most effective tools in developing our Krsna consciousness. Poetry uses mimnimum words to present maximum meaning, and it is easy to recite, sing, and remember. If anyone wants to share their poetry, songs or artwork with me, and thus inspire me in my spiritual life, I would be very grateful. I am also considering having a section on my blog to exhibit such works.

The photo of Prabhupada posted along with this article is one of my dearest objects of meditation. My dear friend Yudhistthira, who painted the portrait of Prabhupada in my previous post, has just offered to do a large painting of this photo for the Buenos Aires temple. Please accept my blessings. I beg to acknowledge receipt of your nice letter with some poems, as well as a nice picture of Radha and Krishna, by separate mail. Unfortunately, in transit the glass is broken into pieces, but still I have kept your picture in my working room, and everyone praises your artistic sense. It is very nice. I am very glad to learn also that you are attempting to paint similar pictures in larger size, that is very good idea. You have got some poetic sense also, and all these talents, the artistic sense and poetic sense, can be engaged in the service of Krishna. All devotees are more or less poets. Out of 26 qualifications of a perfect devotee, one is poetic sense. So we can write so many poetries in praise of the Lord, or about His pastimes. Similarly we can draw so many nice pictures about His different activities, and such engagements will give us chance to elevate ourself to the perfectional platform of spiritual understanding.

Hoy, Mangal Aratik fue muy especial para mi. Como era el día de la desaparición de Srila Prabhupada, yo estaba más motivado que lo usual en meditar en Su Divina Gracia a medida que recitábamos las oraciones del Guruastakam, y en esa meditación los pensamientos que me llegaron fueron inusualmente inspiradores. No es que fueran profundos en el sentido de que estaba experimentando realizaciones que nunca antes había tenido o de las cuales nunca antes había oido. Y tampoco eran profundas en el sentido escolástico. Pero la presencia de Prabhupada en ese día tan especial, el hecho de que fuera Mangal Aratik, la asociación de los devotos y el darshan de las Deidades todo combinado produjeron la intensidad de aquellos pensamientos y le otorgaron un significado más profundo.

Aquí esta lo que yo pensaba a medida que cantábamos cada verso. Oro para que durante Mangal Aratik mi mente nunca más divague y que yo pueda continuar en la misma modalidad de aprecio y glorificación de nuestro bienamado salvador, maestro espiritual y amigo.

1) El maestro espiritual recibe bendiciones del océano de misericordia. Así como una nube derrama agua, el maestro espiritual libera al mundo materialmente, extinguiendo el fuego ardiente de la existencia material. Yo ofrezco mis respetuosas reverencias a los pies de loto de tal maestro espiritual, quien es un océano de cualidades auspiciosas.

Gracias Srila Prabhupada, por salvarme del ciclo de nacimiento y muerte, y sus ilimitadas miserias.

2) Recitando el santo nombre, danzando en éxtasis, cantando y tocando instrumentos musicales, el maestro espiritual esta siempre absorto en el movimiento de sankirtana del Señor Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Debido a que él esta saboreando la melosidad de la devoción pura, a veces sus cabellos se erizan, su cuerpo se estremece y lágrimas fluyen de sus ojos como torrentes de lluvia. Yo ofrezco mis respetuosas reverencias a los pies de loto de tal maestro espiritual.

Gracias Srila Prabhupada, por otorgarnos el extático Santo Nombre, sin el cual aún estaríamos absortos en la música y el espejismo de los así llamados placeres de este mundo material, y sin el cual no tendríamos la potencia para elevar a las almas condicionadas.

3) El maestro espiritual esta siempre ocupado en la adoración en el templo de Sri Sri Radha Krsna. Él también ocupa a sus dicípulos en tal adoración. Ellos visten a las Deidades con hermosas ropas y ornamentos, limpian su templo y ejecutan otras adoraciones similares al Señor. Gracias Srila Prabhupada, por darnos el purificador refugio del suntuoso prasadam del Señor y por hacer que el servicio hacía Él sea tan agradable a través de la toma de Sus divinos remanentes.

5) El maestro espiritual esta siempre ansioso de escuchar y cantar acerca de los ilimitados pasatiempos conyugales de Sri Sri Radha y Madhava, y de Sus cualidades, nombres y formas. El maestro espiritual aspira siempre a saborear esto a cada momento. Yo ofrezco mis respetuosas reverencias a los pies de loto de tal maestro espiritual.

7) El maestro debe ser honrado tanto como el Señor Supremo, debido a que es el sirviente más confidencial del Señor. Estos es reconocido por todas las escrituras reveladas y seguido por todas las autoridades. Por lo tanto, yo ofrezco mis respetuosas reverencias a los pies de loto de tal maestro espiritual, quien es un representante fidedigno de Sri Hari [Krsna].

Gracias Srila Prabhupada, por tan misericordiosamente descender a nuestra plataforma tan baja para elevarnos aunque muy seguido olvidemos nuestra verdadera posición como asociados íntimos del Señor Supremo y fallemos en ofrecer el apropiado respecto.

8) Por la misericordia del maestro espiritual, uno recibe la bendición de Krsna, sin la gracia del maestro espiritual uno no puede hacer ningún avance, por lo tanto, yo siempre debo recordar y honrar al maestro espiritual. Today, Mangal Aratik was very special for me. Because it was Prabhupada's disappearance day, I was more moved than usual to mediate on His Divine Grace as we chanted the Guruastakam prayers, and in that meditation the thoughts that came to me were unusually inspiring. Not that they were profound in the sense that I had realizations that I had never had before or had never previously heard. And not that they were so deep in the schoarly sense. But the combination of Prabhupada's presence on that special day, the fact that it was Mangal Aratik, the combined association of the devotees, and the darshan of the Deities all brought about the intensity of those thoughts and gave them deeper meaning.

Here is what I was thinking as we sang each verse. I pray that during Mangal Aratik my mind never wanders again and that I can continue in the same mood of appreciation and glorififaction of our most beloved savior, spiritual master and friend.

1) The spiritual master is receiving benediction from the ocean of mercy. Just as a cloud pours water on a forest fire to extinguish it, so the spiritual master delivers the materially afflicted world by extinguishing the blazing fire of material existence. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master, who is an ocean of auspicious qualities.

Thank you Srila Prabhupada, for saving me from the cycle of birth and death, and its countless miseries.

2) Chanting the holy name, dancing in ecstasy, singing, and playing musical instruments, the spiritual master is always gladdened by the sankirtana movement of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Because he is relishing the mellows of pure devotion within his mind, sometimes his hair stands on end, he feels quivering in his body, and tears flow from his eyes like waves. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

Thank you Srila Prabhupada, for bestowing upon us the ecstatic Holy Name, without which we would still be absorbed in the music and the myriad of so-called pleasures of this material world, and without which we would have no potency to elevate the conditioned souls.

3) The spiritual master is always engaged in the temple worship of Sri Sri Radha and Krsna. He also engages his disciples in such worship. They dress the Deities in beautiful clothes and ornaments, clean Their temple, and perform other similar worship of the Lord. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

Thank you Srila Prabhupada, for allowing us to worship and serve the supremely beautiful, divine forms of the Lord, the only true repose of oursenses.

4) The spiritual master is always offering Krsna four kinds of delicious food [analyzed as that which is licked, chewed, drunk, and sucked]. When the spiritual master sees that the devotees are satisfied by eating bhagavat prasada, he is satisfied. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

Thank you Srila Prabhupada, for giving us the purifying shelter of the Lord's sumptuous prasadam and to make service to Him so palatable through the partaking of His divine remanents.

5) The spiritual master is always eager to hear and chant about the unlimited conjugal pastimes of Radha and Madhava, and Their qualities, names, and forms. The spiritual master aspires to relish these at every moment. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

Thank you Srila Prabhupada, for enlightening us with truths we never before relished and which, unlike all relative truths, were able to lift us beyond illusion and place us as the lotus feet of the divine couple. And thank you for inspiring us to deliver this liberating nectar to others.

6) The spiritual master is very dear, because he is expert in assisting the gopis, who at different times make different tasteful arrangements for the perfection of Radha and Krsna's conjugal loving affairs within the groves of Vrindavana. I offer my most humble obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

Thank you Srila Prabhupada, for giving us entrance into the intimate pastimes of the Lord, where we one day hope to serve you in your nitya lila, your eternal pastimes.

7) The spiritual master is to be honored as much as the Supreme Lord, because he is the most confidential servitor of the Lord. This is acknowledged in all revealed scriptures and followed by all authorities. Therefore I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such aspiritual master, who is a bona fide representative of Sri Hari [Krsna].

Thank you Srila Prabhupada, for so mercifully coming down to our lowly platform to uplift us even though we so often forget your true position as the intimate associate of the Supereme Lord and fail to offer you proper respect.

8) By the mercy of the spiritual master one receives the benediction of Krsna. Without the grace of the spiritual master, one cannot make any advancement. Therefore, I should always remember and praise the spiritual master. At least three times a day I should offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master.

Thank you Srila Prabhupada, for allowing us to try to please you and for so kindly offering our service to Krsna. We know that we would be completely lost without your constant support and we are thus holding on to your lotus feet for our very lives lest we fall back into the abyss of the material world.

En 1969, Srila Prabhupada dijo en una carta a Madhvi Lata: "Lo mejor sería que involucre tu tiempo y energía enteramente en cantar y en pintar bonitos cuadros. Eres una niña muy talentosa y puede pintar cuadros super excelentes, lo he visto. Ahora estamos abriendo nuevos centros en todo el mundo y necesitamos muchos cuadros en nuestros templos para que la gente venga y se atraiga por la belleza de Krishna. Es necesario. Hoy, la gente esta facinada por tanto brillo de la así llamada belleza de la energía externa, y hay necesidad de hermosos cuadros de Krishna, de Sus devotos y de Sus Pasatiempos para atraerlos al proceso espiritual. Este es un gran servicio, y hay una urgente necesidad de semejantes cuadros. Nuestra Jadurani ha hecho tantos cuadros bonitos, y están distribuidos a lo largo de nuestros templos, pero aun hay escasez de suministro. Y ella ahora esta enferma e imposibilitada de trabajar velozmente debido a su condición de salud. La profundidad del caracter y la belleza del Señor y sus representantes son muy bien presentados a través de las obras de arte de los devotos. Al atraernos más y más a semejante arte, somos transportados mucho más allá del reino de la mera belleza y sensibilidad material. He posteado algunos ejemplos aquí. Estos dos cuadros y la foto de la maqueta son el flujo del bhakti de devotos que conozco y con los cuales hago servicio; y eso le otorga al arte aun más sentido para mi. Obras como estas son tan cautivantes que uno puede sentirse perfectamente feliz al meditar en ellas constantemente, sin ningun deseo de deleitarse con otra cosa. Esta es la perfección de nuestros ojos. Las artes y las actividades culturales dentro de Conciencia de Krishna realzan nuestras practicas espirituales y le facilitan a cualquier la posibilidad de situarse naturalmente en vida devocional.

Color, entusiasmo, y emoción están todos allí originalmente en el mundo espiritual dentro de los pasatiempos y los corazones de Krsna y Sus devotos. Prabhupada tan misericordiosamente nos ha traído este mundo a nosotros y nos permite hacer servicio dentro de él. Es dinámico y siempre fresco. Oremos para que nunca más caigamos al mundo de la miseria y la felicidad ilusoria.

ART IN KRISHNA CONSCIOUSNESS

In 1969, Srila Prabhupada said in a letter to Madhvi Lata: "Best thing will be if you can engage your time and energy fully in chanting and in painting nice pictures. You are very talented girl, and you can paint very super excellent pictures, I have seen it. Now the thing is that we are opening new branches all over the world, and we require so many pictures in our temples so that people may come and see and be attracted by the beauty of Krishna. That is needed. The people today are fascinated by so much of the glimmering so-called beauty of the external energy, and there is necessity of seeing beautiful pictures of Krishna and His devotees and His Pastimes, in order to attract them to the spiritual process. So this is a great service, and there is urgent need for such paintings. Our Jadurani has done so many nice pictures, and they are distributed amongst our temples, but still there is shortage of supply. And she is now sick, and unable to work very swiftly due to her health condition. So I request you to simply sit down wherever you are, and paint nice pictures for being distributed to all centers. This will help you, and it will help others as well."

The depth of the character and beauty of the Lord and his representatives is so nicely brought out through the artwork of the devotees. Becoming drawn more and more to such art, we can be carried far beyond the realm of mere material beauty and feeling. I have posted some examples here. These two paintings and the photo of the diorama are the outpourings of the bhakti of devotees I know and serve with, and that gives the art even more meaning to me. Works like this are so captivating that one can feel perfectly happy meditating upon them continuously, without any desire to relish anything else. That is the perfection of the eyes. The arts and cultural activities within Krishna consciousness enhance our spiritual practices and make it easier for anyone to become naturally situated in devotional life.

Color, excitement, and emotion are all originally there in the spiritual world within the pastimes and hearts of Krsna and His devotees. Prabhupada has so mercifully brought that world to us and is allowing us to serve within it. It is dynamic and ever fresh. Let us pray that we are never drawn back into the world of illusory happiness and misery.

EL AMANECER DE KRISHNA

"El resultado de tener conciencia de Krsna es que uno se va iluminando cada vez más, y disfruta de la vida con emoción, no sólo por algún tiempo, sino a cada momento." Srila Prabhupada, Bg. 18.76, Significado.

La foto junto a este posteo es uno de los tantos amaneceres hermosos en Rehoboth Beach Delaware donde realizaba mi sadhana matutino el verano pasado. Para un devoto, cantar rondas con semejante vista del Sol es muy encantador porque él/ella sabe que Krsna, el Artista Supremo, esta obrando Su magia. De hecho, si apreciamos un amanecer como éste sin ver allí la mano de Krsna, sólo nos estaríamos cegando aun más frente a las opulencias y dualidades de esta creación y, en el nombre del placer, nos mantendríamos ignorantes ante nuestra verdadera y bienaventurada identidad espiritual. Por lo tanto, para ayudarnos a recordarlo e inspirarnos a conocerlo más íntimamente, Krsna dice: "Sabed que todas las creaciones opulentas, hermosas y gloriosas brotan tan sólo de una chispa de Mi esplendor" Bg. 10.41

Muchas veces tomamos fotos para capturar un momento significativo en el tiempo, para poder revivirlo una y otra vez, y utilizar esa inspiración para motivarnos aun más en la vida espiritual. La belleza de conciencia de Krsna es que un devoto puede aprender a experimentar constantemente tales momentos felices - e incluso otros aun más felices - para que, aunque debamos disfrutar del pasado, no tengamos que vivir aferrados a "los buenos viejos momentos", o perder el tiempo lamentando que sus placeres ya se han esfumado.

Luego de un tiempo, mi estadía en Rehoboth llegó a su fin y me encontré abandonando la playa, el amanecer, las olas y a todos los maravillosos devotos allí. Pero, aunque ciertamente sentí una gran separación de todo ello, las palabras de Prabhupada me dieron la fe de que todo estaría bien, y que Krsna, el principio subyaciente de todo, haría que al menos cada momento fuera tan estético como el anterior. Habrá miles de nuevos amaneceres - y, por supuesto, miles de días nublados también. Pero, si miramos en el lugar correcto, siempre veremos a Krsna allí, brillando y sonriéndonos a través de todo ello.

KRISHNA SUNRISE

"The result of Krsna consciousness is that one becomes increasingly enlightened, and he enjoys life with a thrill, not only for some time, but at every moment." Srila Prabhupada, Bg. 18.76, Purport.

The photo along with this post is of one of the many beautiful sunrises at Rehoboth Beach Delaware, where I was doing my morning sadhana last summer. For a devotee, chanting rounds with such a view of the sun is so enchanting, because he/she knows that it is Krsna, the Supreme Artist, who is working His magic. In fact, if we appreciate such a sunrise without seeing Krsna's hand there, it would only serve to bind us more to the opulences and dualities of this creation and, in the name of pleasure, keep us ignorant of our true blissful spiritual identity. Thus, to help us remember Him and inspire us to know Him more intimately, Krsna says: "Know that all opulent, beautiful and glorious creations spring from but a spark of My splendor" Bg. 10.41

Often we take pictures in order to capture a meaningful moment in time, so that we can relish it over and over and use that inspiraton to propel us further in spiritual life. The beauty of Krsna consciousness is that a devotee can learn to constantly experience such happy moments - and even happier ones - so that, although we should indeed relish the past, we do not have to live in it, cling to "the good old days", or lose our time lamenting that its pleasures are now gone.

After a while, my time at Rehoboth came to an end and I found myself leaving the beach, the sunrise, the waves, and all the wonderful devotees here. But although I certainly felt great separation from it all, Prabhupada's words gave me the faith that everything would be just fine, and that Krsna, the underlying principle of everything, could make every moment at least asecstatic as the last. There will be thousands more sunrises - and, of course, thousands more cloudy days as well. But if we look in the right place we will always see Krsna there, shining and smiling at us through it all.

ROGANDO POR AMOR

Recién leí esta linda historia narrada por Srila Prabhupada:

“Krishna esta completo. ¿Porqué esta rogando? Él esta implorando por tu amor. Eso es todo. Cuando Krishna quiere un servicio de ti o te ruega por algo, no significa que Él lo necesite. Él no lo precisa. Pero Él necesita tu amor porque tu haz olvidado cómo amar a Dios, cómo amar a Krishna. Hay una historia de un sannyasi una vez fue a pedir a una casa. Ellos no son mendigos, pero se presentan de ese modo para que el dueño del hogar pueda recibir y aprovechar su sabiduría. Entonces un mendigo se acercó a una residencia y la señora de la casa dijo, “Oh, este mendigo ha venido a nuestra puerta. Démosle unas cenizas.” Y el sannyasi respondió, “Muy bien. Denme unas cenizas. Comiencen con su caridad.” De modo similar, cuando Krishna pide, “Denme una pequeña flor, algunas frutas, un poco de agua”, eso no significa que Él este mendigando. Cualquiera que tenga Deidades es tan afortunado de que Ellas presidan sobre su hogar o templo, ansiosamente a la espera de nuestras ofrendas de amor y siempre listas para reciprocar con nuestros humildes actos de devoción. Conciencia de Krsna es tan simple, y podemos ver por lo que aquí dice Prabhupada que incluso con un pequeño esfuerzo uno puede tomar un gigantesco paso adelante en su viaje de regreso a casa.

BEGGING FOR LOVE

I just read this nice story narrated by Srila Prahupada:

"Krishna is full. Why is he begging? He’s begging for your love. That’s all. Whenever Krishna wants some service from you or begs something from you, it does not mean that He is in need of it. He is not in need of it. But He is in need of your love because you have forgotten how to love God, how to love Krishna. There is a story that once a sannyasi went to a householder for begging. They are not beggars, but they introduce themselves like that so that the householder may receive and take advantage of his knowledge. So one beggar went to a householder, and the housewife said, “Oh, this beggar has come to our door. Give him some ashes.” So the sannyasi replied, “All right. Give me some ashes. Just begin your charity.” Similarly, Krishna, when He asks, “Give me a little flower, a little fruit, a little water,” it does not mean that He is begging. He is just introducing me to the practice of offering everything to Krishna." Lecture in Montreal, 17 August 1968.

Anyone who has Deities is so fortunate to have Them presiding over their house or temple, eagerly awaiting our offerings of love and ever ready to reciprocate with our humble acts of devotion. Krsna consciousness is so simple, and we can see from what Prabhupada is saying here that even with just a little endeavor one can take a giant step forward on his journey back to home.

Hoy estuve inspirado al leer una sección del Bhagavatam donde el Señor Krsna describe la maravillosa actitud de servicio de los árboles de Vrndavana:

"Algún tiempo después, el Señor Krsna, el hijo de Devaki, rodeado de sus amigos vaqueritos y acompañado por Su hermano mayor, Balarama, viajó a una buena distancia de Vrndavana para arrear a las vacas. Cuando el calor del Sol se hizo intenso, el Señor Krsna vio que los árboles actuaban como paraguas para ofrecerle sombra, y habló del siguiente modo a Sus amigos. (El Señor Krsna dijo): Oh Stoka Krsna y Amsu, Oh Sridama, Subala y Arjuna, Oh Vrsabha, Ojasvi, Devaprastha y Varuthapa, sólo vean a estos árboles tan afortunados, cuyas vidas están completamente dedicadas al beneficio de otros. Incluso mientras toleran el viento, la lluvia, el calor y la nieve, ellos nos protegen de estos elementos. ¡Sólo vean cómo estos árboles mantienen a cada entidad viviente! Sus nacimientos son un éxito. Sus comportamientos son como las de las grandes personalidades, pues aquellos que le piden algo a éstos árboles nunca se van decepcionados. Estos árboles cumplen los deseos de uno con sus hojas, flores y frutos; con su sombra, raíces, corteza y madera, y también con su fragancia, savia, cenizas, pulpa y brotes. Es el deber de cada ser vivo ejecutar actividades de bienestar para el beneficio de otros con su vida, riqueza, inteligencia y palabras." SB. 10.22.29 – 35.

Podemos ver que en el mundo material la mentalidad general es "Yo primero". En Goloka es "Tu primero", tal el ejemplo de estos árboles. Y como se especifica más arriba, estos árboles mantienen su mentalidad desinteresada aun cuando deben soportar gran sufrimiento personal. Krsna llama a estos árboles "grandes afortunados" o maha bhagan pues debido a semejante cantidad de entrega incondicional a los demás, ellos satisfacen Su corazón plenamente y Él satisface plenamente el de ellos.

El árbol es tan buen ejemplo de entrega que cuando Krsna aparece como el Señor Caitanya, Él lo glorifica nuevamente; y luego, al aconsejarnos que nos volvamos todavía "más tolerantes que un árbol", Él nos indica que debemos avanzar aun más y superarlo en magnanimidad. El Señor Caitanya es el indicado para inspirarnos de este modo porque Él es la mismísima encarnación de la magnanimidad, siendo Su corazón el corazón de Radha, la personificación de la naturaleza amorosa y compasiva del Señor Krsna. Nuestra llave al éxito, por lo tanto, es seguir al Señor Caitanya, tal como lo hizo Srila Prabhupada y del mismo modo en que él nos enseñó a hacerlo. Entonces un día, por Su misericordia, nosotros también obtendremos un vistazo al corazón de Radha y nos volveremos maha bhagan, más afortunados de lo que nos pudimos imaginar jamás.

DESIRE TREE

Today I was inspired by reading a section of the Bhagavatam where Lord Krsna describes the wonderful service attitude of the trees of Vrndavana:

"Some time later Lord Krsna, the son of Devaki, surrounded by His cowherd friends and accompanied by His elder brother, Balarama, went a good distance away from Vrndavana, herding the cows. Then the sun's heat became intense, Lord Krsna saw that the trees were acting as umbrellas by shading Him, and thus He spoke as follows to His boyfriends. [Lord Krsna said:] O Stoka Krsna y Amsu, O Sridama, Subala y Arjuna, O Vrsabha, Ojasvi, Devaprastha y Varuthapa, just see these greatly fortunate trees, whose lives are completely dedicated to the benefit of others. Even while tolerating the wind, rain, heat and snow, they protect us from these elements. Just see how these trees are maintaining every living entity! Their birth is successful. Their behavior is just like that of great personalities, for anyone who asks anything from a tree never goes away disappointed. These trees fulfill one's desires with their leaves, flowers and fruits, their shade, roots, bark and wood, and also with their fragrance, sap, ashes, pulp and shoots. It is the duty of every living being to perform welfare activities for the benefit of others with his life, wealth, intelligence and words." SB. 10.22.29 - 35

We see that in the material world the general mentality is "Me first". In Goloka it is "You first", as exemplified by the trees. And as said above, the trees maintain their selfless mentality even when having to undergo great personal suffering. Krsna calls those trees "greatly fortunate", or maha bhagan, because on account of such unconditional absorption in giving to others, they fully satisfy His heart, and He thus fully satisfies theirs.

The tree is such a good example of surrender that when Krsna appears as Lord Caitanya, He again glorifies it; and then, advising us to become even "more tolerant than a tree," He indicates that we should go further and surpass it in magnanimity. Lord Caitanya is indeed the one to inspire us in that way, as He is the very incarnation of magnanimity, His heart being the heart of Radha, the personification of the loving, compassionate nature of Lord Krsna. Our key to success, therefore, is to follow Lord Caitanya, as did Srila Prabhupada, and as he taught us to do. Then one day, by Their mercy, we also will get a glimpse into the heart of Radha and thus become maha bhagan, more fortunate than we can ever imagine.
